SSL Certificates provide a secure method to exchange information over the Internet. At first glance, SSL software encryption may be intimidating. Which one do you buy and how do you install it? First, you need to understand the difference between the two types of SSL Certificates:
Low Assurance: This type of SSL certificate validates the domain. They give a modest level of sucurity for emails or login passwords. They do not provide the merchant grade protection required for secure credit card transactions. Low Assurance certificates are cheap, have no company validation and are often called an "Instant SSL".
High Assurance: Both the domain and the company that operates it are investigated before a High Assurance SSL certificate is issued. Only High Assurance certificates meet the government and credit card industry standards for eCommerce. Using anything less may result in fines and/or the revocation of your merchant account.
Don't be fooled! Some vendors promote that large Internet merchants have purchased their cheap (Low Assurance) certificates. Indeed, they may have bought one for another purpose. No reputable merchant would risk using a Low Assurance certificate for eCommerce.
